Maid of the Mist from the American side

The older boat, the cheaper ticket, and the only bank where you can walk out onto the Hurricane Deck afterwards and get hit by Bridal Veil Falls from six feet away.

Short answer

Maid of the Mist boards at Prospect Point inside Niagara Falls State Park, New York. The adult fare is US$30.25, ages 6 to 12 are US$19.75, and under-fives ride free. The 2026 season runs 24 April to 8 November, its 141st. The ride is about twenty minutes, the poncho is blue, and the single best pairing on this side is Cave of the Winds on the same ticket.

What the American side gives you that Ontario does not

Two things, and one of them is the reason to be here at all.

Cave of the Winds. A wooden walkway system rebuilt every season that puts you on the Hurricane Deck, close enough to Bridal Veil Falls that the water is landing on you rather than near you. Nothing on the Canadian bank compares, and pairing it with the boat gives you the two genuinely physical experiences at Niagara back to back.

The Observation Tower and Goat Island. You are on top of the American Falls rather than across from them. It is a different relationship to the water: you look down the drop instead of at it, and the walk out to Terrapin Point on Goat Island puts you on the lip of the Horseshoe itself.

What you give up is the postcard. The head-on view of the Horseshoe crestline exists only from Ontario, and no amount of walking around Goat Island will produce it.

Buying the ticketUS$30.25 adult. Online tickets are valid on any open day, in-person tickets are day-specific
Getting downElevator from the Observation Tower to the gorge landing

Queue, midday JulyAn hour or more across tickets, elevator and boarding
On the waterAbout 20 minutes: American Falls, Bridal Veil, then the Horseshoe basin

If you are doing both the boat and Cave of the Winds, do the boat first. The Hurricane Deck soaks you far more thoroughly, and starting there means spending the boat ride already wet.

Getting there and getting back

The park sits at the end of Old Falls Street in the city of Niagara Falls, New York, about a thirty-minute drive from Buffalo Niagara International Airport. Buffalo is the practical gateway if you are flying in for this, and the drive is short enough that a day trip from the city genuinely works.

From New York City it does not. The distance is around 400 miles, which is a full day each way by road, and the day trips sold from Manhattan are long, coach-heavy affairs. If that is your plan, read the honest version first: what a Niagara day trip from NYC really involves.

Crossing to Ontario afterwards is a walk over the Rainbow Bridge with a pedestrian toll, and it requires a passport, NEXUS card or enhanced driver's licence for everyone in your group. The border rules in full.

American-side questions

How much is Maid of the Mist?

US$30.25 for an adult, US$19.75 for ages 6 to 12, and free for ages 5 and under with a paying adult. Those are the operator's own published 2026 fares. Park parking and Cave of the Winds are charged separately.

When does Maid of the Mist open in 2026?

24 April 2026, running through to 8 November. That is the 141st season. The start date follows the removal of the Lake Erie ice boom, which began on 6 April in 2026.

Do you need a passport for Maid of the Mist?

No, not if you are already in the United States. It boards inside Niagara Falls State Park in New York. You only need a passport or enhanced ID if you plan to cross the Rainbow Bridge to the Canadian side during the same trip.

Is Maid of the Mist wheelchair accessible?

Yes. The operator states the experience is ADA accessible, with elevators and ramps down to the boarding area and wheelchairs permitted aboard the boats.

Should you do Maid of the Mist or Cave of the Winds first?

The boat first. Cave of the Winds puts you on the Hurricane Deck directly under Bridal Veil Falls and soaks you far more thoroughly than the boat does, so doing it first means spending your twenty minutes on the water already wet through.

How long does the whole American-side visit take?

Budget three to four hours for the boat, Cave of the Winds and the Observation Tower together in shoulder season, and closer to five in July or August once queues are counted. The boat itself is only twenty minutes of that.
