Whirlpool jet boat or the falls boat? They are not the same thing
Two boat tours at Niagara, and only one of them goes to the waterfall.

Short answer
They are entirely different products. The falls boats run twenty minutes into the Horseshoe Falls basin. The Whirlpool jet boats run about forty-five minutes of Class V rapids in the lower gorge from Lewiston, New York or Queenston, Ontario, and never approach the falls at all.
Search for a Niagara boat tour and you will be shown two things that share almost nothing except the word boat. Booking the wrong one is a common and expensive mistake, because the jet boats cost roughly double and go in the opposite direction.
The rapids ride and the Falls sightseeing cruise are different outings. Match the river experience, Queenston transport and provider requirements before choosing.

What is the difference between the jet boat and the falls boat?
Location and purpose. The falls boats sail upriver from landings beside the falls into the Horseshoe basin for about twenty minutes. The Whirlpool jet boats run downriver from Lewiston or Queenston through the Class V rapids of the lower gorge for about forty-five minutes, and never see the falls.

That last row is the one to read twice. People book the jet boat expecting to arrive at the waterfall, and it does not go there. The gorge below the falls is spectacular in its own right, but it is a different attraction.
Which one should you book?
The falls boat, if this is your first visit to Niagara and you want to see the waterfall from the water. The jet boat, if you have already done the falls boat and want an adrenaline product rather than a spectacle.

What is the jet boat actually like?
Fast and physically demanding in a way the falls boats are not. The route runs the Class V rapids of the lower Niagara River and the Whirlpool itself, at speed, in a boat designed to hit waves rather than avoid them. Niagara Falls Tourism describes it as a whitewater experience rather than a sightseeing one.
There are two versions and the difference is the roof.

Both run the same water. The open boat is not a rougher route, it is the same route without a roof. Given that both are considerably more expensive than a falls cruise, choosing between them on comfort rather than intensity is the sensible approach.
Do the jet boats cross the border?
They operate from two departure points, one in each country, and you pick the one you can reach. Lewiston is in New York and Queenston is in Ontario. Booking the wrong side means an unnecessary border crossing.
This is worth checking carefully on any listing, because product names on the booking platforms sometimes name the region rather than the departure point. If you are staying on the Canadian side, book the Queenston departure. If you are in Buffalo or Niagara Falls, New York, book Lewiston. Can you do both in one day?
Yes, and it makes a genuinely good day if you have the time and the budget. The falls boat in the morning while queues are short, then the jet boat downriver in the afternoon, gives you the two completely different faces of the same river. The one thing to avoid is booking the jet boat as your only boat at Niagara. Whatever else it is, it is not a way to see the falls, and the operator is clear that its route is the gorge rather than the cataract.

Does the Whirlpool jet boat go to Niagara Falls?
No. It runs the Class V rapids and the Whirlpool in the lower Niagara gorge, several miles downstream of the falls, departing from Lewiston in New York or Queenston in Ontario. To see the falls from the water you need Maid of the Mist or Niagara City Cruises.
How long is the jet boat ride at Niagara?
About forty-five minutes on the water, which is roughly double the twenty minutes of either falls cruise. That is one of the few respects in which it offers more than the falls boats.
What is the difference between the wet and dry jet boats?
A roof. The open-top boat takes waves directly into the vessel; the domed boat runs the same route under an enclosed canopy. The water is identical, so choose on comfort rather than expecting a gentler ride.
Is the jet boat scarier than the falls boat?
Considerably. The falls boat has no speed and no sudden movement; it is loud and wet. The jet boat is a genuine thrill ride with waves, speed and being thrown about. They are not comparable experiences.
Which is better value?
The falls boat, if you want to see Niagara Falls, because that is the thing you came for and it costs considerably less. The jet boat is better value per minute on the water, and worse value if what you wanted was the waterfall.
Do the jet boats run all year?
No. Like the falls boats they are a warm-season product on a river that ices over in winter. Season dates are set by the operator and differ slightly from the falls cruises, so check the listing for the dates you are travelling.
